Midnight Rooster travels from Belmont College to Lexington, Kentucky to record a few songs. This is what Steve Nall, head engineer had to say:
What a phenomenal session this was! Nashville's Midnight Rooster is the kind of band every Producer/Engineer wants to work with. All of the guys are great people as well as excellent musicians.
During tracking for the song "Catch Me If You Can", I thought keyboardist Kory Caudill, was going to pound right thru the piano keys! I tell ya, this guy is one of - if not the - best young keyboardist I have ever worked with. He pulls off some amazing work in these songs. Check out the solo on "Catch Me If You Can" and what I like to call "The Galaga solo" work on "Tower of Inspiration" for a couple of examples of what I mean. Not that the rest of the band are slouches by any stretch of the imagination!
Drummer Greg Dampier handled every time, style and tempo change (and believe me, there were a few!) like he'd been playing the songs since birth. He's a very well taught player who, although still young, has all the chops of a seasoned session player.
Justin Smith, the bassist, threw down some sweet pop & slap licks and still managed to keep the bottom end covered. He's super tight in that rhythm pocket and his distorted solo on "Tower of Inspiration" is just insane! He's definitely one of the fastest "finger-style" players I've worked with.
Of course, a band with a rhythm section like this has to have a simply monstrous guitarist. Matt Reviere is that man. At only 19 he shows the talent of players like the great Steve Vai and Frank Zappa. Check out the dueling solos of Matt Reviere and Kory at the end of "Tower of Inspiration" and you'll understand.
All in all, this was a great session for myself and my assistant engineer Deshawn Steele. Having a group of such talented players made our jobs almost too easy!! It was a wonderful experience and I can't wait to get these guys back in the studio and lay down some more smokin' tracks!
